Kawhi Leonard came off the bench as the LA Clippers defeated the Lakers.
In Los Angeles Kawhi Leonard decided to hold off a little longer before making his eagerly awaited return for the LA Clippers after sitting out the entire previous campaign.
To make the most of his limited playing time, Leonard made the team's first non-start decision. The Los Angeles Lakers were defeated by the Clippers once more after he finished the game. At Crypto.com Arena, Leonard contributed 14 points, including a 21-foot shot with 52.3 seconds left to secure a 103-97 victory.
Despite the franchise player entering the game at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter and playing three stints totaling 21 minutes, the Clippers defeated their hallway opponent for the seventh consecutive time.
Regarding his wait to enter the game, Leonard noted, "It was a long one. I didn't think 15 minutes would be too lengthy, but I waited for 82 games last year.
With the first time since November 2013, when he was playing for the San Antonio Spurs, Leonard was a reserve in his first game back after tearing his right ACL in Game 4 of the second round against the Utah Jazz on June 14, 2021.
After reviewing the data and doing simulations with him starting and filling in during practise, Leonard claimed he decided not to start. With the Clippers likely to challenge for a title, Leonard and the organisation want him to stay in shape and be at his best for the postseason. As he makes progress, they want to make the most of his playing time and have him finish the game while those minutes are played.
Leonard reflected on the possibility of beginning and still winning the game: "One scenario with me starting, I would have been sitting like 35 minutes real time." "It's been far too long. I simply believed that this circumstance was ideal. But as time goes on, we'll have to wait and see."
Once he was back on the ground, Leonard wasted no time. His first two shots, both from midrange, where he frequently prefers to operate, both went wide.
John Wall, who made 7 of 15 shots and scored 15 points in 24 minutes in his first game since April 23, 2021, remarked "First [Leonard] got the rebound, went coast-to-coast and knocked his little trademark fadeaway." "For him, rhythm and tempo are everything.
"He is a man who works hard and sticks with what he wants to. He is like a machine. In essence, he approaches it as a workout. He appears not to be aware of anyone in front of him. It all depends on whether he makes or misses a shot."
Leonard only made one of his four attempts from beyond the arc, unable to find his rhythm. However, he made some crucial plays, defying LeBron James' charge late in the fourth and sinking that jumper with little over a minute left to give the Clippers a six-point lead after the Lakers overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half.
Leonard remarked of leaving the bench, "I did this before." "I started my profession in this manner. That was my thinking approach to it. When I check in the second quarter, pretend that I was in foul trouble and it's time to play basketball."
Leonard admitted that it's likely he won't suit up for at least one of this weekend's back-to-back games against Phoenix at home and then at Sacramento.
Leonard advised gradual playing time in order to strengthen the ACL. "It might easily weaken up once you start playing a 38-minute first game, but I'm listening to the doctor with that.
"The season is lengthy. We want to make the playoffs, and I want to play there."
Leonard said he probably needs to see his minutes increase back to the 34.1 minutes he averaged in 2020–21 before he can say for how long he plans on coming off the bench.
It all depends on how my knee reacts, Leonard remarked. When I'm ready to play 35 minutes — I believe I played 33 minutes when I was healthy — that's probably when you'll see me starting. We'll see how it feels tomorrow, and then gradually increase as time goes on.
